Cavity cleaning and prevention is something you should pay close attention to. Dental caries (tooth decay) are small holes in the hard surface of the teeth. They occur because of bacteria on the tooth surface that produce acid from sugar. The most common culprit is a type of bacteria known as Streptococcus mutans.

These bacteria form a sticky layer called dental plaque. The acids in plaque remove minerals (demineralization) from the enamel, which is the outer layer of the tooth made mostly of calcium and phosphate. This erosion creates tiny holes in the enamel. Once the acid damage spreads into the dentin layer beneath the enamel, a cavity forms.

Getting Rid of Cavities at Home

Tooth decay has been linked in some research to a deficiency of vitamin D in the diet. In one study, children who added vitamin D to their diet showed a decrease in tooth decay.

However, the best results were seen in children who not only added vitamin D, but also cut out grain products from their diet. This may be because many grain-based foods can stick to the teeth.

Not getting enough vitamin D may make teeth more vulnerable to decay, but we now know this is only one part of the bigger picture.

Other risk factors for tooth decay include:

– Frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks

– Poor oral hygiene (not brushing and flossing properly)

– Dry mouth (reduced saliva flow)

– Acidic foods and beverages

– Existing dental plaque and tartar buildup

– Certain medical conditions and medications

Once a cavity has penetrated into the dentin, you will not be able to eliminate it at home. However, the following home measures may help prevent tooth decay or treat “incipient caries” (early, pre-cavity lesions) by remineralizing weakened areas of enamel before a full cavity forms:

– Using fluoride toothpaste as recommended by your dentist

– Reducing sugar and sticky carbohydrates in your diet

– Ensuring adequate vitamin D and calcium intake

– Maintaining excellent daily oral hygiene (brushing and flossing)

– Using fluoride mouth rinses if recommended

When You Should See a Dentist for Cavity Cleaning

If you’re worried you might have a cavity, it’s time to schedule an appointment with the dentist. A toothache that doesn’t go away, or spots and discoloration on your teeth, are also good reasons to see your dentist.

In addition, visiting the dentist routinely every 6 months and getting regular dental X‑rays is one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay or stop existing cavities from progressing into more serious problems, such as root canal infections or fractures that make the tooth non-restorable.

If you’re concerned about cavities and don’t already have a dentist, you can book an appointment with the doctors at Batal Specialty Center.
